Conditions for which over the counter items should not routinely be prescribed was created by Andrew D Price
A list of 33 minor health concerns had been identified by a national joint clinical working group which are either self-limiting or suitable for self-care, it was proposed items should not be routinely prescribed for these. Sandwiched at number 12 on the list of minor illnesses suitable for self-care, just below diarrhoea and just above ear wax was Dry Eyes/Sore Tired eyes, the proposal involved removing items for this condition from being able to be prescribed for the majority of patients. to access detailed information on the consultation. NHS England currently spends just under £13,000,000 per year on these eye care products.
The probability is that NHS England will advise CCGs that a prescription for these items should not routinely be offered in primary care. If your local CCG takes that advice, many patients will turn to their trusted Eye-Care practice or Pharmacist for supply and further advice on these topical eye care products.
As an Eye Care/Health Care Professional are you prepared for this? Using Eye Drops Database, along with other sources of information, could help you help your patients better. You can find products in this website and by using the key word search box to explore 364 products that you may want data on. Data includes; Dosage, How Supplied, CL Use, Indications, Contra-Indications, Adverse Reactions, Legal Category, many with colour product images and PDFs.
Declarations of interest: It's my website, where a number of companies pay me for sponsorship. I also provide paid consultancy work for Thea Pharmaceuticals as well as providing DE and CL lectures, workshops and articles which I am paid for
