Juliette Vila Sinclair-Spence and I have produced patient handouts to provide guidance on the use of contact lenses as prescribed medical devices. It is hoped they will give even more protection to your patient (and you!) and enable you to be seen to be providing an even higher level of care from an Eye Care/Health Care Professional.

I give the appropriate handout at each contact lens appointment and whenever contact lenses are dispensed from the practice. This is documented. Editable versions are available from adpconsultancy@gmail.com

Beth Ralph FBDO CL MBCLA and I have produced an Informed Consent to provide medico-legal support on the use of contact lenses as prescribed medical devices. It is hoped they will give even more protection to your patient (and you!) and enable you to be seen to be providing an even higher level of care from an Eye Care/Health Care Professional.

We use the document when prescribing contact lenses, before a teaching appointment, as it is important the patient has the opportunity to discuss aspects of it with the prescribing ECP before signing. There is a case to made that Informed Consent is a continuing decision by the patient so it may be used more than once, certainly if a significant lens or mode of wear is made.
