Subject: Response to the Introduction of the New MOptom Degree
This message is in response to the introduction of the new Master’s in Optometry (MOptom) degree that is being offered to new students from this academic year. I would like to express my full support for the development of this programme, which represents a significant advancement in optometry education and training. The inclusion of independent prescribing and the strong focus on clinical experience will undoubtedly help shape a new generation of highly skilled and versatile optometrists.
However, I would like to raise a consideration regarding the recognition of practising optometrists who have completed independent prescribing training after their BSc. Many of us have undertaken postgraduate education in prescribing while working full-time in clinical practice, acquiring the same clinical competencies that are now being integrated into the MOptom. It seems reasonable to ask whether existing qualified optometrists, who have already demonstrated a high level of expertise, should have the opportunity to elevate their BSc to a Master’s level, reflecting the additional qualifications and clinical training they have completed.
While I wholeheartedly support the introduction of the MOptom and believe it’s an important step forward for the profession, it does feel inequitable that experienced practitioners who have already expanded their scope of practice are not recognised at the same academic level. Establishing a pathway for experienced optometrists to elevate their degrees to a Master’s would be a positive step for the profession, ensuring that all optometrists, whether newly qualified or established, are equally valued and recognised for their contributions.
Finally, I would like to extend my best wishes to the new students as they embark on this exciting new journey. May your studies be rewarding, and I hope you make the most of the opportunities ahead. Good luck with your future careers in optometry!
