Acanthamoeba Keratitis (AK) is increasingly becoming a significant topic of discussion among various stakeholders in the eye health community. As a patient advocate and founder of the Acanthamoeba Keratitis Eye Foundation, I want to take this opportunity to share the patient perspective on this rare and often devastating disease.
In the video testimony (within article), I recount my personal experience with Acanthamoeba Keratitis. This condition is not just a medical issue; it is life-altering. The devastation, excruciating pain, isolation, depression and trauma associated with AK are profound, and my hope is that by sharing my story, more people will understand the severity of this rare disease. It’s critical to recognize that Acanthamoeba Keratitis is a preventable condition, and raising awareness is essential to help those who may be at risk.
To healthcare professionals, including ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians, I urge you to remain vigilant in screening anyone who wears contact lenses, particularly if they exhibit relevant symptoms. Misdiagnosis can lead to delayed treatment and worsened outcomes, so let’s work together to ensure that individuals receive the proper care they need.
I also call upon contact lens manufacturers to collaborate with us in our efforts to prevent Acanthamoeba Keratitis. Together, we can explore solutions that promote safer practices for contact lens wearers, ensuring their health and well-being.
Moreover, I encourage regulators to consider measures that would prevent easy online access to contact lenses without proper verification and education. It is crucial that consumers are informed about the potential risks of improper lens usage and that they understand the importance of proper care and hygiene.

Thank you to everyone who is contributing to raising awareness, conducting vital research, developing innovative solutions, providing effective treatment, and offering support for those affected by this challenging condition. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against Acanthamoeba Keratitis.
